Seen on a kiosk today in Paris.  Here is the bottom half of the poster:

I don’t actually know the answer to the question.  Nor to the second-order question, namely why would anyone buy a collection of books in order to answer the first question.

      My answer was a conscious tribute to Lewis Carroll’s celebrated riddle (from Alice in Wonderland “Why is a raven like a writing desk?” and Donald Knuth’s punning answer “Because [Edgar Allen] Poe wrote upon them.”

      Lamentably, the dual English meaning of “spotted” doesn’t translate naturally to French; (neither does Knuth’s answer to Carroll’s riddle, as far as I can tell).
